5 Essential Tips for Puppy Training

Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting time, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. Proper training from day one sets the foundation for a well-behaved and happy adult dog.

    1. Start with Basic Commands

Begin with simple commands like 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. Keep training sessions short—about 5-10 minutes—to match your puppy's attention span. Always use positive reinforcement like treats and praise.

    2. Establish a Routine

Puppies thrive on routine. Consistent times for meals, potty breaks, playtime, and sleep will help them feel secure and significantly speed up the potty training process.

    3. Socialisation is Crucial

Expose your puppy to different people, environments, sounds, and other animals in a safe, controlled manner before they are 16 weeks old. This prevents fearfulness and aggression later in life.

    4. Crate Training

A crate should be a safe haven, not a punishment. Make it comfortable and gradually increase the time your puppy spends in it. It helps with house training and prevents destructive behaviour when you can't supervise them.

    5. Be Patient and Consistent

Every puppy learns at their own pace. Consistency from all family members is vital so your puppy doesn't get confused. Celebrate the small victories and stay patient through the setbacks.

Remember, training is an ongoing process. If you need support with your puppy's routine, our dog walking and home visit services can help maintain consistency while you're at work!
